Local food banks in London received over 6,000 meals last week thanks to an appeal by the national charity, the Vegetarian Society. The charity’s appeal is raising money to fund food boxes following increased demand on food banks. The Vegetarian Society is working with the Trussell Trust to get as many food boxes out to as many food banks as possible. To donate to the appeal, visit www.vegsoc.org/foodbank
Each food box contains the ingredients and recipe for two nutritious, filling veggie meals, which will make eight servings of food.
Many people are losing their jobs or being paid less because of the coronavirus crisis. The number of people needing to use food banks has increased dramatically in these difficult times.
Over 6,000 meals were sent to five Trussell Trust food banks most in need – Norwood and Brixton, Hillingdon, North Enfield, Euston and Camden Foodbanks.
Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive of, the Vegetarian Society, said: “Thanks to the generosity of donors, over 16,000 meals in total have already been sent to people using food banks across the UK. We want to get more food boxes out to as many food banks as possible because we know people in London need help right now. If you can make a donation you’ll be helping to get dinner on the table for people who have nothing to eat. The more you are able to donate, the more meals we will be able to get to people. To donate please visit www.vegsoc.org/foodbank”
One family who took a food box home said: “We were really excited to receive the box. It felt like a gift as everything had been thought of, down to little packets of salt and pepper, to cook two delicious meals.”
The Vegetarian Society is a national charity.
