Today Waitrose published their annual food and drink report showing one-third of UK adults had reduced or stopped their meat consumption.
This report follows other recent studies showing the growing demand from shoppers for vegetarian and vegan food.
Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive at the Vegetarian Society, said: “This demonstrates the growing interest we’ve seen in plant-based food. By working closely with supermarkets, food companies and restaurants we’ve helped to bring about the tipping point we are now seeing. There has been a seismic shift in attitude. This has led to a huge jump in interest from dedicated vegetarian and vegan menus across chain restaurants to the vegan week on the Great British Bake Off.
Supermarkets and companies have had to react quickly to the changing needs and demands of consumers, from Tesco hiring a director of plant-based innovation to ASDA offering vegan cheese at their pizza counter. We can all see the change around us in everyday life.”
Here at the Vegetarian Society, we are passionate about veggie food! We want everyone to know how varied and delicious vegetarian dishes are – and how easy it is to enjoy a veggie lifestyle.
