This week a new appeal launched to get meals into local food banks in the Birmingham area, following increased demand. The appeal by the national charity, the Vegetarian Society, is raising money to fund food boxes to distribute at Birmingham Food Banks. The Vegetarian Society is working with the Trussell Trust to get as many food boxes out to as many food banks as possible. To donate to the appeal, visit www.vegsoc.org/foodbank
Each food box contains the ingredients and recipe for two nutritious, filling veggie meals, which will make eight servings of food.
Many people are losing their jobs or being paid less because of the coronavirus crisis and the number of people needing to use food banks has increased dramatically.
Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive, the Vegetarian Society, said: “Thanks to the generosity of donors, 16,360 meals have already been sent to people using food banks across the UK. We want to get over 400 food boxes out to people in Birmingham who need help right now. If you can make a donation, you’ll be helping to get dinner on the table for people who have nothing to eat. The more you are able to donate, the more meals we will be able to get to people. To donate, please visit www.vegsoc.org/foodbank”
One family, who took a food box home, said: “We were really excited to receive the box. It felt like a gift as everything had been thought of, down to little packets of salt and pepper, to cook two delicious meals.”
The Vegetarian Society is a national charity.
