The Tofu Guru: My Experience
Kirsty, our Marketing and Communications Officer, recently attended The Tofu Guru cookery class – read about her experience below!
Before attending the Tofu Guru cookery class, my experience with tofu was limited to occasionally using it to add to a veggie stir-fry. I found the class to be a really eye-opening experience and I’m still not quite over the numerous ways tofu can be used in different recipes– from breakfast dishes to desserts!
The first thing we learned to make was how to whip up our own tofu from scratch. I had expected this to be quite complex but I was delighted to find that it was a relatively simple process that only needed a few ingredients – perfect for me to recreate at home!
After we had prepped chocolate tofu cakes, Maz, our tutor, demonstrated how tofu can be used to make a delicious omelette – no eggs required! Drizzled with Kecap (a sweet soy sauce) and packed with crunchy veg, it was absolutely incredible. For lunch we made crispy tofu “fish” accompanied with mushy peas, oven cooked chips and tartare sauce – all homemade!
While we were eating, it was great to chat to other course attendees and discuss the different reasons we had for coming on the course. Several people, like me, wanted to learn innovative uses for tofu, while others were keen to increase their protein in-take or expand their range of vegetarian and vegan recipes.
After a cup of tea and a slice of the chocolate cake we had made in the morning, (it was unbelievably good!) we spent the afternoon making tofu tikka kebabs. Maz taught us tips and tricks to improve our knife skills, which I found massively helpful, and it’s revolutionised the way I chop veg at home.
We finished the day with another brilliant demo – Maz showed us how to make smoky tofu “bacon” before serving it to us in the form of BLT sandwiches!
I learned so much throughout the day and, as we were emailed all the recipes, I’ll be able to make them again at home. I’m really keen to attend another class – I have my eye on the Vegan Meat Guru. Like tofu, seitan isn’t something that I regularly cook with and I know it can be used in a huge range of ways!
I’d really recommend coming on one of our classes to anyone who wants to expand their repertoire and would love a fun day out!
