In October, a group of Scouts aged 6 to 14 years old, from Wythenshawe in South Manchester, asked the Vegetarian Society Cookery School to put on a series of cookery sessions as part of their scout camp in nearby Dunham Massey forest.
The Scouts Leader said: “We would like to teach the children the basics of food prep and cooking,” and wanted to instil some enthusiasm for cooking fresh food.
The children were excited to try many new flavours for the first time and to handle fresh fruit and vegetables, alongside preparing their meals. They started off by tasting sesame oil, two kinds of soy sauce and hot Sriracha sauce.
After introducing some new ingredients, the children put together a colourful stir fry, packed with delicious vegetables, including carrots, beansprouts and peppers. They finished the dish off with crispy shallots.
The generous support of the Vegetarian Society members and donors helps us to provide cookery skills to local community groups, like the scouts, which furthers our charitable aims.
Sam Platt, the Vegetarian Society Cookery School Manager, said: “It is fantastic to see the kids enjoying cooking from scratch and experimenting with different flavours and textures and getting them cooking in a way they may not normally be used to. We were delighted to help the scouts do something a little bit different with their camp.
“Our Funded Course Programme helps reach community groups that would not otherwise get the chance to do something like this, and we are excited to do more of this in 2019.”
